I aimed to create a piece which presented an amalgamation of both my realist style as an artist and that of Daniel Butterworth, an artist known to be more ‘paintily’ with his brushwork. I had completed the workshop with him before and found it difficult to stray from my tight, realistic style of portraits, this difficulty enhanced as I was painting my sister. However, after completing the workshop a second time almost a year later, painting myself, I felt more comfortable and willing to explore Butterworth’s free-form, loose brushwork. My choice of colours hold steadfast to my realist style, the complimentary blues and orange hues used to emphasise my features while set against a cool grey background. The large scale of the self-portrait offers a challenge to my usual smaller-scale paintings, lending to Butterworths often larger pieces, and a bold testament to my willingness to venture out of my comfort zone as an artist.
