My unit 4 final piece titled ‘Feeling’ depicts a vibrant blue surrealist self-portrait in a setting I captured in my Japanese hometown called Sakaide. My portrait aims to symbolise uncomfortable raw feelings that we experience as humans, such as isolation, melancholy and overwhelm, which can often feel difficult to explain or embarrassing to show. Through a scenic and colourful contemporary rendition, I aim to shed light over these feelings as it is something that is a shared experience for everyone. In my composition, my choice of a predominantly blue colour palette and use of transparent washes aims to symbolise such numbness and isolation as if the figure is fading away. I have chosen to include Japanese goldfish surrounding the figure ‘s head to contribute to creating a sense of surrealism but to also represent a sense of rush and dizziness as the fish swarm around in different directions. In contrast, my choice of background illustrates a place that personally represents safety, peace and tranquility, which appears close but too far for the figure as she experiences a wave of different emotions. I hope that viewers are able to create their own varying interpretations to see what emotions they can make out of this large-scaled, phantasmagorical painting.
