This artwork communicates the story and message of the golem, the story being that of a sture created by and for the Jewish community, to protect them. There are many examples of golem archetype in modern culture, especially the characters of Superman and Captain America, which I have grown up reading and admiring. It is currently an increasingly fraught time for the Jewish community, and I have witnessed this in Australia. I wanted to create the gure of protection for my community that has stuck with us from old folktales to superheroes. Inspired by this story and its accompanying sculptures and descriptions, I created my version of the golem out of rake clay using the coil pot technique. Through this sculpture I’m trying to communicate the sense of comfort and protection that the golem was created for in a more modern way whilst still making the aesthetic that the original golem had.
